There are days or conversations, I don’t know which or whether it’s one or both, when we refuse to engage. We walk down aisles whether in actuality as in a grocery store or library or in one’s mind just to avoid a person or subject in another aisle for whom or which one feels no particular animus at all ,neither hostility nor attracting motivation, just the necessity to avoid a nearness of that something or someone that one knows intimately but at this moment would rather not. These are purposely and purposefully lonely days and thoughts. They are the intermissions between engagements, the doldrums in the passage one way or another through the equatorial regions of the mind. They usually pass.
